Devon and Cornwall

Steel-line engraving print by Thomas Allom. Oakhampton Castle. circa. 1830.

Situated in Devon, England. This delightful scene shows a small castle atop a mound with tall, bushy trees about which cover it. A river encircles the mound. In the sky a group of birds fly up high into a sky half covered by thick, dark cloud and half clear light. Page size 8" x 5 1/2" with the engraving being 6" x 4". Some slight foxing to the edges which does not impair the picture.

The pleasant building having four extended pillars to the front with many large rectangle windows. To the front of the mansion a narrow stone path leads around the corner. On grassland to the front sheep are grazing whilst on the lane are two gentlemen on horses with a man on foot. socializing. All in a fine landscape lit up by clouded sun. Thomas Allom (1804 - 1872) was born in 1804 in London he was a artist and architect and studied at the Royal Academy. He was extremely talented (especially at finishing architectural drawings) as a skilled architect but his fame was due to his numerous published views which are widely appreciated in his day. In 1824 he exhibited designs of a cathedral. Thomas Allom died at Barnes in October of 1872. The page is 8" x 5 1/2" with the engraving being 6" x 4".

Delightful. fine quality steel engraving of a waterfall and a stone quarry. near Boscastle. 1830.

This breathtaking engraving shows a tall waterfall. its powerful waters crashing over the edge into a lake formed of an old stone quarry. Evidently the stone quarry is still being used as to the right of the engraving is a horse and cart and some quarry workers. Other workers can just be made out on the slopes of the quarry. A flight of birds fly over the waters where they calm from the waterfalls entrance. The print is 8" x 5 1/2".

Very Good condition. There is some heavy foxing/brown edging.
