This unusual engraving from the Gentlemans Magazine August 1783 is titled "Hut of a Kalmuc of Eminence."

The elaborate furnishings show that this Kalmuc tribesman. similar to the Monguls. was a man of importance. and includes illustrations of two stringed musical instruments. The Gentlemans Magazine - Was a periodical founded by Edward Cave (1691-1754) in 1731 under the pseudonym of Sylvanus Urban. It began as a review of news. essays and comment from other journals. but by January 1739 it was publishing original work and Samuel Johnson became a regular contributor with parliamentary reports. maps. reviews of publications and music. Published by Sylvanus Urban. Gent. Printed and folded at St. Johns Gate by F. Jefferies in Ludgate Street. This print is 8 1/4" x 4 3/4".
