Pre 1900 Religious prints

Wonderful. fine quality steel line engraving by J.Rogers titled. "The Angel Stopping Balaam". c.1869.

This interesting print shows a man on a donkey. Both man and beast show shock and surprise upon their face. In front of them stands an angel holding aloft a flaming sword in an act of warning. The man is dressed in the Victorian ideas of a middle-eastern dress during Biblical times. The scene is found in the Bible. Book of Numbers. chapter 22. verse 26: "Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam. and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way. and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head. and fell flat on his face." The engraving is 8" x 10 1/2" and in good condition with some foxing / browning around the edges. There is also a waterstain in the top edge that does not impair the picture.

Original print of a four women preparing the Christian for his pilgrim. circa. 1881.

This interesting print shows the Christian knelt down with his arms spread to each side of his body. One of his hands is holding his shield. There is two women knelt each side of him harnessing him for the pilgrimage in front of him. In front of the man is his armor. There are two women stood behind him to the side with their heads together, moping looking sad, one is holding his helmet. Behind them are three pillars of the palace room, which are beautiful. The print is 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" .

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "Daniel Interpreting The Writing On The Wall". painted by B.West and engraved by J. Rogers. c.1869.

This engraving has Daniel standing in the canter of the engraving pointing towards the writing on the wall. In a chair sits a king who looks on at Daniel with surprise while surrounding him and Daniel are several wise men with scrolls of knowledge. Several courtier`s also stand around watching the scene. The scene is from Daniel. Chapter 5. Versus 22-28; "24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written. 5:25 And this is the writing that was written. MENE. MENE. TEKEL. UPHARSIN. 5:26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom. and finished it. 5:27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances. and art found wanting. 5:28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided. and given to the Medes and Persians." Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "David Sending A Letter To Joab By Uriah" painted by F. Bol and engraved by J. Rogers. circa. 1869.

This engraving shows David sitting in his throne and passing a letter to Uriah to carry to Joab. David has two advisors on either side of him. All are dressed in Victorian ideals of classical costume. The scene is found in the Bible. Samuel II. Chapter 11. Verse 14; "14. And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying. Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle. and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die." The print size 10 1/2" x 8 1/2". Some foxing / brown edging with a slight water stain on the right side.

Wonderful print of a pilgrim being healed by heaven. c. 1881.

This interesting print shows a large hand coming down from the skies. the hand is touching the wounded pilgrim who is knelt on the ground wounded by a demon that he has been fighting with. The pilgrim is looking up at the hand with a look of relief on his face. In front of him is broken bows and arrows and his sword. In the foreground the demon is swooping down away from the pilgrim. This print is 8 1/2" x 10 3/4" . The picture is 51/4" x 6 1/2".

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "Isaac Blessing Jacob" circa. 1869.

This engraving shows Jacob kneeling to his father Isaac. Isaac has his hands raised in benediction and blessing over Jacob. Both are dressed in costume that the Victorian`s believed to be suitable for the Middle-East at that time. The scene can be found in Genesis Chapter 27. verse 29-30. 29 "Let people serve thee. and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren. and let thy mothers sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee. and blessed be he that blesseth thee. 30 And it came to pass. as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob. and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father..." The print is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2".

Very Good condition. There is some foxing / brown edging.

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "The Judgment of Solomon" painted by Poussin and engraved by J. Rogers. c.1869.

This engraving shows King Solomon sitting in judgment of the two woman and the baby. A soldier holds the baby by the leg ready to cut the child in two as Solomon instructed. On either side of Solomon are the woman involved in the dispute. both are crying out in horror of Solomon`s judgment. The scene is from 1 Kings. Chapter III. Versus 19-27. "And the king said. Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said. Divide the living child in two. and give half to the one. and half to the other. Then spoke the woman whose the living child was unto the king. for her bowels yearned upon her son. and she said. O my lord. give her the living child. and in no wise slay it. But the other said. Let it be neither mine nor thine. but divide it. Then the king answered and said. Give her the living child. and in no wise slay it: she is the mother there of." The print is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" and in

Wonderful print of a the pilgrim in the palace. circa. 1881.

This interesting print shows the Christian inside of the beautiful palace. He is sat on a small stall in front of the three Sisters looking up at them. they are instructing him. The three Sisters are sat on a wonderful bench which is extremely decorative. each side of the seat are two pillars. which a marble statue of an angel is holding up. This print is 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" . The picture is 7 1/4" x 5 1/2".

Wonderful print of a Christian who has reached a temple. circa. 1881.

This interesting print shows a Christian who has reached a temple. He has one foot on a step the other on ground level. He is being welcomed by discretion and her Sisters. They are stood outside of the temple with welcoming gestures to go in the temple. They are wearing pretty but simple dresses. In the foreground you can see another part of the temple. it has delightful large pillars. on top of the pillars are statues of angels in marble. This print is 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" . The picture is 6 3/4" x 5 1/2".

This interesting print shows a Christian who is about to start his journey of life. He has been harnessed in his suit of amour. The pilgrim is stood with his hands to the right side. holding his sword downwards. above his head. he has a shield on his back. Behind him to the right are the four sisters stood side by side. who harnessed him in his suit of amour. They are stood with one arm pointing to him. with their other arm around each other. In the sky the sun is shining brightly making the skies glow. This print is 8 1/2" x 10 3/4". The picture is 51/4" x 6 1/2".
