French Naval Fortification

£24.99
In stock
Wonderfully rare fine quality copper plate engraving from a French Pre-Revolutionary encyclopedia showing a plan of a French naval fortification. circa. 1774.

Before the French revolution the French were considered to be the masters of fortification building in Europe. This plan shows a shore fort somewhere on the French coast. The outer walls are built using a "star" formation as opposed to the traditional flat walls. This was to enable any attacking cannon fire to be reflected from the main walls. Within this main fort the battlements can clearly be seen as can a smaller secondary fort to the left of the engraving. Within the main walls of the fort can be seen smaller secondary buildings used to house troops or arms. Central in the fort is a small dock and the approach can be seen which was also protected by a fortified wall. On the landward side (the left of the print) can be seen a defensive ditch and two sets of defensive walls. one separated from the other by a moat. A scale is included in feet. The engraving is 13" x 8 1/2".

Very Good condition with some foxing / browning around the edges.
