American Slavery print from the London Illustrated News

Interesting fine quality print showing two pictures from the London Illustrated News titled. "The Dandy Slave: A scene in Baltimore. Maryland" and "Slaves for sale: A scene in New Orleans". April 6th 1861. The top print shows a slave carrying an umbrella over the head of his mistress. A article next to the picture contains a fuller description of the scene. The slave is shown in clothing of some value with a long frock coat and a tall hat. In his hand he carries a book. His mistress is opening the door to her house. She wears a long dress with a hooded cloak. In the bottom print are a group of slaves for sale. Once again. an article above the the print contains more description. The men are dressed in suits and top hats while the women are dressed in good dresses. A man is looking at the woman with a mind to buy her. Two of the men sit in dejection while the remainder stand. The print is 11" x 16".

Very Good condition with very slight foxing / browning. There is also text on the front and back of the print.

General Winfield Scott

Wonderful fine quality print titled. "General Winfield Scott. Commander-in-chief of the United States Forces". March 16th. 1861. General Scott had a long military career with the US Forces. His career began in 1812 with the Anglo-American war before taking part in the war with Mexico. In 1838 he was in command of a force that engaged the Cherokee. However. in 1861. the beginning of the American Civil War. General Scott was in command of the Union forces in the North and at one point was described as second only to the president. Although he tried to avoid war with the Confederates he still took pains to prepare the north for armed conflict. The print is 11" x 16".

Very Good condition. There is some foxing / brown edging. There is also text on the back of the print.

New York Volunteers

Interesting. fine quality print containing two pictures from the London Illustrated News titled. "Colonel Ellsworth`s Volunteer Regiment (The New York Fireman Zouves)" and "Reading the war news in Broadway. New York". June 15th 1861. The top picture shows a soldier and an officer from the New York Fireman Zouves. The officer wears a knee length coat and carries a sword while the soldier carries a pack on his back. His right arm supports a musket with bayonet. His coat is only waist length. Both mens trousers bear a large stripe down the seam of the trouser leg. The bottom picture shows a crowd of people gathered around a large print newspaper with the latest news about the war. The crowd are dressed in a variety of clothes from all walks of life. A man to the right of the picture is reading his own newspaper. An article is included with this print detailing a British idea of how the American Civil War was progressing in June 1861. The print is 11" x 16".

Very Good condition with very slight foxing/browning. There is also text on the back of the print.

Wonderful. fine quality print titled. "The Crowd At Baltimore Waiting For Mr Lincoln. President Of The United States". March 23rd.1861. Street scene in Baltimore before the visit by President Lincoln. The crowd has people from well dressed gentlemen and ladies through to young children and African-Americans. The crowd is typically pushing and shoving and a large group of people can be seen leaning out of a building. The print is 16" x 11".

President of Southern USA

Wonderful. fine quality print of two scenes. the top titled. "The inauguration of the hon. Jefferson Davis as President of the Provisional Government of the New Southern Confederacy of America" and the second titled. "Schools of St.Mary-the-Less. Lambeth". March 23rd 1861. The top print shows a building built in American architectural style of the 19th century. Standing around it is a huge crowd waiting for the inauguration of the President for the Southern States. All of the people are dressed in costume of the Southern States during the 19th century. This is a dramatic moment in American History as it shows a clear break between the North and the South leading to Civil War. The bottom print shows the school in Lambeth. Looking distinctly church like in style it shows a religious school dedicated to St.Mary. Therefore it is quite possible that this is a Catholic School. Children can be seen playing in a yard suggesting that it is a school for children rather than for adults. The print is 11" x 16".

War Meeting in New York

Interesting. fine quality print from the London Illustrated News titled. "The "Union" mass meeting held in Union Square. New York on the 20th of April". May 13th 1861. This interesting print shows a mass rally in the canter of New York. The crowd is huge and can be seen all the way to the background of the print. Several banners bearing the Stars and Stripes can be seen waving in the air. People hang out of the windows of nearby windows to cheer and wave their flags. In the foreground can be seen a group of men marching with a drummer and the Union Flag waving at the front. A statue of George Washington can be seen pointing forwards and carrying the American flag. The print is 16" x 11".
