Amusing. fine quality print from Punch magazine titled "Orpheus-Bismarck Lulls Cerberus To Sleep". 1889. In Greek Mythology Orpheus had to enter the Underworld. To do this he had to get past the guardian of the doorway. the three headed dog Cerberus. As Orpheus was a poet he lulled the dog to sleep with music. This print shows the German Chancellor. Bismarck. dressed as Orpehus playing a harp and lulling the Cerberus to sleep. The three heads of Cerberus. instead of dog`s heads instead consist of Turkey. Russia and Austrian heads of state. Around the neck of Cerberus is a sign called "Triple Alliance". The print is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2".

Very Good condition. There is some foxing / brown edging.

"Germany marching slowly and cautiously in the colonial path". The engraved page measures 10 1/2" x 8 1/4".

Amusing. fine quality print from Punch magazine titled - "A Difficulty Solved. Prince Henry of Battenburg presenting the future Viceroy to the loyal people of Ireland - suggested as an Historical Parallel". June 1st. 1889. This print shows a pose taken from a picture of Edward I presenting his young son to the Welsh in 1284. In this modern satirical print Prince Henry is presenting his son in a similar fashion. Behind him is a nurse-maid and his wife while to the left is a herald with a trumpet bearing the Union Jack. All are dressed in costumes of the medieval period as is the background to the picture in the setting of a castle. The print is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2".

Very Good condition. There is some foxing / brown edging.

Amusing, fine quality print from Punch magazine titled "The Rival Pets; Or, Fondling and Feeding". November 2nd 1889. This print shows Kaiser William of Germany with two symbolic pets. He is dressed in traditional German military costume while in his hand he holds the dove of peace. However. behind him sits a large eagle. the symbol of Germany. tearing flesh from a bone of which it is written ?14.000.000. This is perhaps a referance to Germany`s military build-up over the years of Bismarck`s Chancellorship. The print is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2". There is some foxing/brown edging.
