Fine Quality Steel-plate engraved print of King Charles I in the guard room (1642). Engraved by W. Hulland from the painting by Paul de la Roche. Circa. 1869.

At the end of the first stage of the English Civil War. Parliament was the victor and placed Charles I on trial for crimes against the State. The jury found Charles I guilty and sentenced him to death. He was executed at Tower Hill on a winters morning in front of a jeering crowd. The scene the print shows is the night before the execution when Charles I was placed in a guardroom. He is seen sitting in the center with several soldiers surrounding him. some jeering celebrating his demise. whilst one soldier seems repentant of his acts. The page is 7" x 10 1/2". Some foxing/brown edging and slight brown spotting.

During the 14th and early 15th centuries England was involved in the Hundred Years War against France. Circa. 1869

During the 14th century Edward III l laid siege to the city of Calais. After several weeks of fighting the people of Calais asked to surrender. Edward agreed on the condition that five men come to him with nooses around their neck to be hung. Five men did so but were spared after Queen Philippa begged for their lives. This picture shows this dramatic moment. Edward III sits on the throne while Queen Philippa kneels in front of him begging for the lives of the men. Next to her kneels a man holding the symbolic keys to the city of Calais. Five men with nooses around their neck stand to the right of the picture. All around stand various soldiers and in the background are the walls of Calais. The engraving is 11" x 7".

Very Good Condition with only a little foxing.

Wonderful. fine Quality Steel-plate engraving of Mary Stuart and Chatelar (1542-1587) engraved c.1869.

Mary Stuart (Mary Queen of Scots) is one of history`s victims. Her first marriage fell apart and she was accused of murder with her lover. Exiled to England she was placed in captivity by Elizabeth I until her execution for conspiring with the Catholics against the Queen. The print is drawn during her period of captivity in England. Mary is shown holding a book whilst she listens to Chatelar. playing on the lute. In the background. as a indication of her Catholic religion is an icon of Virgin Mary while underneath is a copy of the Bible. The scene is one of peace amid a background of tension and sadness. The page is 7" x 10 1/2".

Good + Condition with some foxing/brown edging.

There is two smaller pictures either side. the one on the left is titled Edward refusing to send assistance to the Black Prince at the Battle of Crecy. The smaller picture on the right is titled Meeting of Edward & the Black Prince after the Battle of Crecy. This print was engraved by A. Fex from the earlier painting by F. P. Stephanoff. The page is 7" x 10 1/2".

Good + condition with moderate foxing around the edges of the print.
