E. Hargreaves: Sailing Vessels in Lively Seas

CODE: 2305074

£850.00
In stock
Undated English Edwardian oil on canvas of sailing vessels in livley seas beyond a pier watched by fishermen / trawlermen and their families. The nearby vessel boasts a diagonal blue cross on a white background.l. Sold Un-framed with original stretcher. Well executed Edwardian oil painting with immense presence and personality, lively yet calm and steady. Executed with an accomplished hand and a genuine feel for the subject matter and the poetry and presence of the place. A slice of life is here which is timeless in its spirit of exuberance confidence and optimism. Beautiful composition, playful joyous narrative, spring breeze in the colours of the palette and a loving illustrators hand to the characters on the pier. The people here are as ambient in their seaward fellowship as Lowry's people are in their cityscapes. This is a very affectionate portrait of a fishing and coastal village which seems well understood by the artist. Someone out there will recognise this pier!!!! with similar affection. This painting is a joy to live with. It has the power to engage the mind in uplifting reverie and nostalgia and restore the senses. You could feel ''suspended in the moment'' too. The palette is very British coastal scene in Spring. Approx. 16" x 22". Very Good condition - part cleaned - as found. Scenes as unique as this handled in such a uniquely personal way are we believe a good investment for the future as they represent an excellent record of our very very human, coastal and village heritage from the early C20.

Samuel George Pollard RA (1839-1910): Fishing Boats Leaving Harbour at Dawn

CODE: 102381

£1,000.00
In stock
Artist: Samuel George Pollard - Fishing boats at sea - a domed building, possible cathedral in the city beyond. This is a satisfying and engaging oil painting on canvas of fishing boats leaving harbor or estuary and is in the European Style. It has aspects of the Impressionist Style in the handling of the reflections and shadows in the foreground waters which are most engaging and delight the eye. The domed building in the distance smolders as if to summon an early return. The rigging is detailed where it is set against the sky and the canvas sails burn with colour. There is a strong emotional and visual response to this powerful iconic image. It is subtle as well as bold in it's spatial and colour plays which create an absorbing set of dramas within a relatively confined canvas. I really like this work and it is a hard one to let go as I would like to watch it and study it in the changing light of the day over time. The scene is believed to be European or British and the painting was found in Devon. There is some evidence of an earlier cleaning which has been sensitively achieved without any apparent upset to the work. There seems to be a minor but skilled and careful restoration to a tiny 1/4" approx area of the brushwork. The canvas is intact and original. The painting comes in it's original frame as found and sits well and comfortably within it, the ambient glow of the finish working with the scene.

Samuel George Pollard flourished between 1864-77 with 7 exhibitions at the RA and 24 further exhibitions including the British Institution and Suffolk Street. His paintings are rarely available on the open market and his work enjoys a good following with Fine Art Collectors.

A few nail holes to the inner frame with some minor marks and chips as found. Overall the canvas, painting and frame are in good/ very good condition and worthy to hang in a good study or reception room or dining room or indeed in a fine library which is our specialty. We like this painting a lot and feel it will gain your heart more over time as a steady favorite that remains able to engage afresh each time. We believe it to be a good investment piece. The frames hinges have cracked with age. Original paper label with artists name etc. to the back. Canvas has not been checked for signature yet but contact us with any queries. More images can be requested. Size: 51cm X 41cm

Vertes / After Vertes ( an artist with his own individual style but also an excellent mimic of other artists) we think and from the 1920's - 40's we believe. Circus scene with ringmaster and acrobat on horseback. Striking Large impressionist oil on canvas. This painting has been exhibited at Olympia Earls's Court in 2005. Sevres did a lot of similar Horse and rider scenes with a disposition towards white horses with female riders. Painting size approx. 5' 6" x 3' 10". Unsigned / indistinct signature. Sympathetic rustic hand made pine frame.

Very Good condition This painting will light up any room and can make a dramatic centrepiece in a conference room, grand hallway, boardroom or grand period home. It is a fine impressionistic rendition of a circus act with all the warmth of a scented straw covered ''big top'
